An Informal Art Critique Session Facilitated by Sola Olulode

On December 9, 2025, G.A.S. Lagos hosted Artist CRIT, an informal art critique session facilitated by Sola Olulode. Designed for artists working across a range of mediums who have often felt underserved by traditional critique spaces, the session provided a supportive environment to share practice, exchange ideas, and receive constructive feedback. Recognising that many artists may have experienced limited opportunities for meaningful critique or spaces where feedback feels rigid or discouraging, Sola structured the session to prioritise openness, dialogue, and mutual respect.

The session began with a welcome address by Sola, who outlined the purpose and ethos of the critique. Attendees, ranging from early career to emerging artists, then introduced themselves and their practices, creating a sense of community and openness. Participants were invited to present works-in-progress or completed pieces, share ideas, and discuss processes with fellow artists. Both physical works such as sculpture, ceramics, and painting and digital presentations, including book readings and digital art, were included, with laptops provided for screen-based work.

During the presentations, attendees engaged closely with the works, exchanging interpretations and reflections with the artists in a dynamic and interactive dialogue. Presenters took the time to share the stories, inspirations, and intentions behind their pieces, offering insight into their creative processes and the choices that shaped their work. Several artists explored deeply personal themes, drawing on childhood memories, intimate experiences, and emotional landscapes, translating these into paintings, sculptures, and other forms. Others focused on broader social, cultural, and historical contexts, engaging with collective memory, diaspora, and historical events through installations, digital media, and performative practices.

Some presentations highlighted experimental and innovative approaches, such as AI-generated imagery, layered digital compositions, and mixed-media assemblages, which encouraged the audience to consider new ways of seeing and interpreting familiar experiences. Across all works, there was a sense of inquiry and exploration, with artists reflecting on both material and conceptual processes, and attendees contributing questions, interpretations, and reflections that enriched the discussion.

The session concluded with a collective reflection, offering all participants an opportunity to share insights, feedback, and takeaways from the experience. Artist CRIT at G.A.S. thus provided a meaningful, collaborative space for artists to explore, experiment, and connect with peers in an atmosphere of encouragement and mutual learning.
