Event: Scaffolding Futures

Event: Scaffolding Futures

Unveiling the Potential of Scaffolds in Contemporary Art and Public Space

Scaffolding, often overlooked as a mere construction necessity, holds profound significance in both the history of architecture and the evolution of our cities. Scaffolding Futures invites participants to rethink this ubiquitous structure, not just as a tool of labour, but as a symbol of transformative potential in contemporary art, design and urbanism. This lecture presentation, hosted by current G.A.S. resident Phokeng Setai, explores the intersection of scaffolding with radical architectural thought, drawing on the practices of 'radical architects' and their challenges to traditional architectural norms. By examining scaffolding as both a physical and metaphorical structure, we engage with its role in shaping skylines, facilitating construction, and its constant presence in the urban landscape.

The discussion will delve into how scaffolding, whether rudimentary or sophisticated, serves as both a facade and a foundational element, shaping not just buildings but the ways in which we inhabit and experience our cities. The program also considers the cultural and social implications of scaffolding. From its historical use in building monumental structures like the pyramids to the bamboo scaffolds seen across Asia, scaffolding has always been a blend of traditional ingenuity and modern necessity.

His presentation will set the stage for an in-depth discussion on the intersection of scaffolding, architecture, and art.
