Event Recap: Y.S.F. Patrons Summer Soirée

Event Recap: Y.S.F. Patrons Summer Soirée

On the evening of 8th July 2024, we hosted our inaugural Patrons Summer Soirée in conjunction with Yinka Shonibare CBE’s exhibition, Suspended States, and in collaboration with residency partner, Tiwani Contemporary.

Our guests, comprised primarily Y.S.F. and G.A.S. Patrons and Partners, were treated to a private tour of Suspended States led by exhibition curator Tamsin Hong. We were delighted to be in the company of Y.S.F. Advisors Sir Antony Gormley and Sir Isaac Julien, both of whom joined our Advisory Panel shortly after Y.S.F. was founded in 2019. The comprehensive tour explored the themes and inspirations behind the exhibited works, examining systems of power, their impact on sites of refuge, debates on public statues, the ecological consequences of colonisation, and the legacy of imperialism on conflict. Y.S.F. Trustee Oba Nsugbe and Y.S.F. CEO Belinda Holden offered an in-depth examination of the intertwined histories of both Foundations highlighting the evolution of Shonibare's social practice from the inception of Guest Projects, London in 2008 to the launch of programmes at G.A.S. Foundation, Nigeria in 2022.

Following the tour, our guests were escorted to Tiwani Contemporary for an exclusive private viewing of In the Blood. The exhibition features Tiwani represented, and associated artists inspired and committed to painting, and considers how their individual approaches to the medium reflect diverse responses to figuration and abstraction. The exhibition, which runs until 14th September 2024 includes work by G.A.S. alumna Emma Prempeh, who was also present at the event. Curator Adelaide Bannerman led a guided tour, which was followed by a beautiful spread of canapés and drinks, providing ample opportunities for conversation and networking among attendees.
