Event: Kitted for Culture

A Presentation and Zine-Making Workshop by Lukman Ipese

Lukman Ipese, a London-based graphic designer and visual communicator whose practice explores graphic design as a shared process shaped by identity, belief, and culture, recently completed a four-week residency at G.A.S. Lagos. During his time in Lagos, he documented everyday spiritual markers across Lagos, from domestic altars and transport signage to markets and sacred spaces, using photography and recorded conversations as a way of tracing how belief systems are embedded within the visual language of the city.

A few days before concluding his residency, Lukman hosted Kitted for Culture at G.A.S. Lagos on April 29th, 2026, a presentation and zine-making workshop that invited participants into his collaborative approach to graphic design and publishing. The session opened with a presentation of selected works from his practice, including Kitted for Culture, his MA project at the Royal College of Art, which reimagined the football shirt as a cultural artefact through collaborations with young football players in Hackney. He also discussed Three Leopards, a project engaging with Nsibidi symbolism, and Draw a Line, a collaborative response to an incident of sexual violence on the London tube.

Following the presentation, Lukman guided attendees through two approaches to zine-making: the eight-page and sixteen-page zine formats. Demonstrating different folding techniques step by step, he introduced participants to accessible DIY publishing methods. Afterwards, attendees used magazines, newspapers, and drawing materials to create their own zines, responding to prompts that explored the spirit and essence of Lagos through both literal and abstract interpretations.
