Applications Open
Guest Artists Space (G.A.S.) Foundation invites applications from Lagos-based creatives and researchers across all disciplines to participate in Collecting Sediments, a two-day earth art workshop co-facilitated by current resident Alexandra Mitiku and the Ala-Praxis Collective.
The coastline is a shifting border between land and water, symbolically echoing the relationship between our own bodies and memories. The workshop looks at developing coastlines and cycles of land formation as a way to collectively re-imagine our futures. It draws on Ala-Praxis Collective's Sonic Walk and Improvised Realities workshops, as well as community art sessions hosted by Alexandra. It is also shaped by both facilitators' practices, which are rooted in conversation and in shifting narratives through collective experience.
On the first day, participants will visit Ecopark Mangrove Sanctuary to listen, collect field recordings and spend time with the coastal environment. On the second day, participants will come together at G.A.S. Lagos to co-create a sand artwork in response to the sounds gathered on the excursion, followed by a coastal-themed dinner.
Throughout the workshop, participants will discuss coastal gentrification, urban development and how extraction is interchangeably a method and a mental state, using these conversations to collectively imagine alternative futures.
The workshop is limited to eight participants, who will be selected through this open call.

Participation is free of charge and open to Lagos-based creatives and researchers based in Lagos, whatever their discipline or level of experience. Transport between G.A.S. Lagos and Ecopark Mangrove Sanctuary will be provided on Day One. Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from G.A.S. Lagos. Refreshments will be provided.

About Alexandra Mitiku
Alexandra Mitiku (b. 1992) is an artist-poet whose practice looks at fantasy and desire as a way to transform oppressive systems; starting with the ones which are internalized. At the heart of her practice lies a river of 한 / Han - a Korean cultural sentiment of deep unresolved grief and rage. This emotional structure is tied to systemic or personal injustice; and the hope for change. It is carried and passed on, evolving through generations. This river becomes a symbolic element in her works; a way of aquatic activation, where metaphysical undercurrents are seen as an influential presence rather than an absence. Her works have been recently acquired by the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma (2024) and the Helsinki Art Museum (2026). She is the recipient of a 3 year working grant from Koneen Säätiö (2025-2027).

About Ala Praxis
Ala Praxis is a research focused collective transforming ideas into practical realities by developing projects that are rooted in the principles of environmental sustainability and Earth centered technology. The collective is made up of: Peace Toba Olatunji, Philip Fagbeyiro, Jadesola Olaniyan, Josh Ike Egesi, Noah Misan Okwudini, and Timilehin Osanyintolu .
Alexandra's residency is realised in collaboration with the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
