G.A.S. Fellowship Award 2026

 

In December 2025, G.A.S. Foundation, in partnership with the Yinka Shonibare Foundation (Y.S.F.), announced the fourth edition of the fully funded G.A.S. Fellowship Award. This is the largest call to date, offering five residencies to Nigerian artists and writers (three artists and two writers), five residencies to art practictioners based in the United States, and two residencies to African-based and diaspora creatives.

 

The G.A.S. Fellowship Award 2026 is made possible through the generous support of Deutsche Bank, Yinka Shonibare Foundation, and the Terra Foundation for American Art.

 

 

 

Recipients for the Emerging Nigerian Artists and Mid-Career Art Writers Categories

The open call for the Emerging Nigerian Artists and Mid-Career Art Writers categories received over 180 applications from practitioners across Nigeria, reflecting the breadth and dynamism of contemporary practices. The selected visual arts fellows are; adeoluwa oluwajoba, a mixed-media artist; Jonathan Chambalin, a multidisciplinary artist and art director; and Yoma Emore, a multidisciplinary textile artist. The writing fellows are; Folasade Ologundudu, an independent writer, curator, and podcast producer, and Olutomi Kassim, an academic researcher and interdisciplinary artist.

 

The visual art fellows will each use their time to develop distinct areas of their practice, while the writing fellows will use the residency to develop and lead a three-day critical writing workshop at G.A.S. Lagos, building on their research and practice to support emerging local writers.

 

Recipients for the African-Based and Diaspora Creatives Categories

The open call for the African-Based and Diaspora Creatives categories received over 90 applications from 12 countries across the continent. The recipients of this award are Akir Hall, a London-based biodesigner and material researcher, and Kevin-Ademola Sangosanya, an experimental artist and researcher based in France.

 

Akir is excited to leverage the G.A.S. Farm House as a site for observation and exchange, engaging with existing material cultures on and around the farm, including agricultural practices, food processing methods, and local craft techniques. Kevin plans to centre his residency on knowledge exchange with local communities, engaging with craftspeople and cultural practitioners.

 

 

Recipients for the U.S. Based Artists Categories

Sponsored by the Terra Foundation for American Art

 

The open call for the U.S. Based Artist categorues received over 50 applications from artists and practitioners working across visual art, writing, design, food studies, and interdisciplinary practice. Following the exceptional quality of submissions received, the selection panel expanded the number of awards from three to five Fellows. The recipients of this award are Chelsea Odufu, a Nigerian-Guyanese American photographer and director; Kim M. Reynolds, a writer, educator, and maker; Moses Hamborg, a figurative painter; Nifemi Ogunro, a Nigerian-American designer, woodworker, and sculptor; and Ọmọlará W. McCallister, an interdisciplinary artist and cultural practitioner.

 

Chelsea plans to deepen her exploration of land, lineage, and spiritual memory through engagement with local materials and agricultural knowledge systems. Kim will research the movement of capsicum across Black cuisines in Africa and the diaspora, developing this work through writing, recipes, and workshops. Moses intends to experiment with locally sourced pigments and minerals in Nigeria, while Nifemi will explore land-based sculpture using found materials from the farm. Ọmọlará plans to engage with Yoruba fibre and textile traditions through work with natural materials, craft practices, and paper-making.
